Hiker Trailers are made out of traditional construction materials, primarily steel, wood, and aluminum.
Frame
We make our frames out of durable steel tubing to ensure maximum durability and longevity. The size of steel depends on the model and ranges from 2"x2" to 2"x3" tube. Our frames are powder coated for protection from the elements and a fine finish.
Box/Cabin
We use a premium, cabinet grade plywood to construct the box or cabin of each Hiker Trailer. The plywood is true 3/4" 7-layer white birch and can easily be matched with wood from your local hardware store if you plan on modifying or adding your own upgrades to your trailer.
Waterproofing
We use several methods to ensure your Hiker Trailer remains waterproof during construction. All of our wood joints are lined with seem tape, similar to housing construction. This plastic, waterproof tape prevents any corner leaks from penetrating into the wood. We also use a rubberized polymer coating on any high traffic area, like the underside of the Box, or on the front where a stray rock may pierce the aluminum. Some annual maintenance is required to keep your Hiker Trailer waterproofing working to its full potential and can be found in our maintenance guide article "".
Insulation
We insulate our roofing with approx. 3" of rockwool insulation to help prevent heat/cool loss. We use rockwool for it's waterproof properties and R-value. We do not insulate the walls or floor at this time.
Siding
We use enameled aluminum to side (or skin) Hiker Trailers. While we have a wide range of colors, we are unable to color match at this time. We also only use white aluminum for the roof to help with insulation.
